책 소개

The Wounded Butterfly and the Turtle — Book Introduction

When wounded hearts recognize one another, new wings can begin to grow.

The Wounded Butterfly and the Turtle is a philosophical coming-of-age tale that explores wounds and healing, friendship and love, self-worth and personal growth through the encounter between a butterfly with an injured wing and a turtle who moves slowly but steadily along its path.

The story was inspired by the sight of a wounded butterfly and a turtle at a butterfly garden on Vancouver Island, Canada. Though very different in appearance and pace, the two creatures journey together, gradually learning to understand and comfort each other’s pain. Along the way, they discover how to accept their own vulnerabilities rather than be ashamed of them, and how to respond to the wounds of others with compassion.

The story invites young readers to understand that hardship and pain do not necessarily end in despair. A wound can become a doorway to understanding another being’s suffering, while a slow journey can offer the wisdom to see the world more deeply. Through the companionship of two very different creatures, the book gently explores the values of respect for life, empathy, kindness, courage, and hope.

Presented with the original Korean text and its English translation on facing pages, this Korean-English bilingual edition is designed for children and adults to enjoy together. It is also especially suitable for overseas Koreans and international learners of Korean at the intermediate level or above. Readers can compare the two languages side by side while developing Korean reading, vocabulary, comprehension, and translation skills, and the story can also serve as a resource for cultural discussion and post-reading activities.

The Wounded Butterfly and the Turtle quietly asks us:

Do our wounds merely make us weaker, or can they become another kind of wing—one that helps us understand the hearts of others?

It is a warm and thoughtful story for children and adults to share as they discover how understanding one another’s wounds can lead to healing, growth, and renewed hope.

요약

Book Review: The Wounded Butterfly and the Turtle

When We Understand Another’s Wound, We Become Wings for One Another

The Wounded Butterfly and the Turtle is a philosophical coming-of-age tale about Luna, a butterfly with an injured wing, and Toby, a lonely, slow-moving turtle. As they journey together through forests and rivers, across the Snow Valley and the Hill of Winds, they meet new friends and gradually discover the true meaning of the mysterious Skyflower. At the heart of their journey is a simple but profound insight: healing is not merely the disappearance of pain; it begins when one being understands, accepts, and patiently accompanies another.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its treatment of woundedness. For Luna, an injured wing threatens the very dream of flying. Toby, meanwhile, carries the burden of slowness and loneliness. Yet when these two very different creatures meet, their vulnerabilities no longer remain merely limitations. Instead, they become pathways through which each can recognize the pain of the other. The statement on the front cover—“The moment we understand another’s wound, we become wings for one another”—beautifully captures the philosophical heart of the story.

What matters most in Luna and Toby’s adventure is not simply reaching a destination but learning how to travel together. Happiness is not found in going farther, climbing higher, or becoming stronger alone. It emerges through understanding, patience, companionship, and love. In this sense, the search for the Skyflower becomes more than a physical adventure. It is an inward journey toward courage, friendship, and self-discovery. The back cover reinforces this idea by presenting the Skyflower as something that ultimately blooms within their own hearts.

The story’s world is enriched by other animal characters, including Silver, Bobo and Toto, Graywing, and Ur. Each possesses a different appearance, temperament, and way of moving through the world. Their presence broadens the story from a friendship between two individuals into a larger community of living beings. Through them, young readers are gently invited to consider the values of empathy, cooperation, respect for differences, and reverence for life.

The book also speaks beyond its young readership. Adults, too, carry wounds that may not be visible. The story suggests that wounds need not remain merely sources of weakness or sorrow. When they deepen our ability to recognize another person’s pain, they can become sources of compassion. In this story, therefore, “wings” are not simply a butterfly’s means of flight. To become someone’s wings is to understand, support, and walk beside that person when the journey becomes difficult.

The Korean-English bilingual format adds another dimension to the work. By presenting the story in both languages, the edition allows children and adults, overseas Koreans, and learners of Korean to encounter the same narrative across linguistic and cultural boundaries. In doing so, it also demonstrates that the emotions at the center of the story—pain, friendship, courage, love, and hope—are universal.

Ultimately, The Wounded Butterfly and the Turtle is a story in which wounds become flowers and friendship becomes wings. What Luna and Toby finally discover is more precious than a distant Skyflower: they discover the ability to understand one another’s pain. For children, the book offers a gentle lesson in friendship, patience, and compassion. For adults, it offers an opportunity to reconsider how we respond to the wounds of others—and perhaps to our own.
