he Bear Comes Down is an ecological coming-of-age story set amid the mountains and forests of Canada. It explores how humans and bears can come to understand one another and share the natural world.
One spring morning, a mother bear and her two cubs enter Grandpa Youngdam’s yard. This unexpected encounter opens the way to a much larger journey through the Apple Tree School, the Forest Wrestling School, Eagle’s lessons in the sky, the Grizzly King’s cave, the School of Healing Herbs, and the Spring of Life. Along the way, the animals learn courage, honesty, friendship, responsibility, and the wisdom of nature. When a wildfire threatens their home, the inhabitants of the forest unite to restore the land.
Reimagining the Korean myth of Dangun and Ungnyeo for contemporary readers, the book conveys a memorable message: “When a bear comes down, it means the forest is coming to visit us.” Presented in Korean and English, it is especially suitable for overseas Korean children and intermediate or advanced learners of Korean.

The greatest strength of The Bear Comes Down is that it does not portray the appearance of bears merely as an occasion for fear or conflict. Instead, it invites readers to remember that humans have entered the territory of wild animals. Grandpa Youngdam’s first thought—“Ah, guests have come to visit”—beautifully expresses the ecological ethic underlying the entire book.
The twenty-one chapters unfold like a series of lessons taught by nature. The animals speak, study, and hold councils, yet their discoveries apply equally to human society: strength should protect the vulnerable, wisdom should be shared with the community, and greed and deception eventually endanger the whole forest.
The connection between the bear and Ungnyeo from the Korean Dangun myth and the forests of Canada is especially compelling. Korean mythological imagination and the North American landscape combine to create an ecological fable with universal relevance. Contemporary concerns—including wildfire, climate change, and the loss of wildlife habitats—are conveyed through a narrative that young readers can readily understand.
