A History of Western Philosophy: 365 Thinkers, One a Day introduces 365 philosophers and thinkers through their lives and questions in Korean and English. Beginning with everyday situations, it asks what the world is made of, what we can trust, how we should live, and what kind of society we should share. Each entry explores a thinker’s answer, the reasons supporting it, and questions that remain open.

The book comprises 15 parts and 30 chapters. Beginning with Thales, it moves through ancient Greece, Hellenistic and Roman thought, medieval traditions, the Renaissance, early modern philosophy, the Enlightenment and the rise of citizenship, and debates surrounding Kant and the nineteenth century. It then considers experience and existence, language and science, power and liberation, ethics and justice, care and equality, and nature and technology, concluding with Jürgen Habermas on dialogue and coexistence. Historical movements and thematic connections bring readers into contact with different traditions and voices.

Korean and English paragraphs appear side by side, allowing readers to compare the same ideas across languages. Every entry includes Today’s Reflection, Useful Expressions, Write Your Own View, and Further Reading. Readers revisit an argument, examine expressions for explaining reasons, and develop their experiences and judgments in writing. Accounts of lives and works distinguish surviving evidence, later reports and interpretations, and present-day examples used to explain ideas.

Twelve appendices, A–L, support rereading and further inquiry. They offer a timeline, a map of fields and schools, a bilingual glossary, comparisons of answers to shared questions, guidance on key texts and sources, and connections with literature, science, and social thought. They also explore diverse traditions and voices, everyday philosophical conversations, English for respectful disagreement, quotation checks, indexes of people, ideas, and works, and a 365-day reading journal. Newcomers to philosophy and readers interested in bilingual reading can work at their own pace, while reading groups can compare answers to the same question and continue the discussion.

Each reading unit centers on one person and a question that engaged them. The Thales entry presents water as a first principle while explaining that the view survives through later accounts and examining its limits. The final entry, on Habermas, uses the example of setting library hours to consider how people share reasons and examine the conditions of a decision. Following claims and reasons through concrete situations connects ideas from distant periods with present-day judgment.

The range of thinkers and questions also deserves attention. Medieval sections explore encounters among languages and religious traditions, while contemporary sections extend to care and dependence, recognition and voice, and nature and technology. Alongside familiar philosophers, the selection invites questions about who speaks and whose experience may be missing. The main text and the appendix on checking quotations distinguish reports, interpretations, and direct quotations, encouraging readers to consider evidence and context even when reading a short passage.

The parallel text and writing activities turn this reading into opportunities for expression. Readers can revisit an argument in Today’s Reflection, draw on Useful Expressions to write their reasons, and return to relevant material through source-reading guidance or indexes. The 365-day journal records both reading and rereading dates, accommodating an individual pace. This structure suits readers building a gradual understanding of philosophical history, those comparing the same arguments in two languages, and reading groups organized around questions and writing.
