The Korean Independence Movement through People and Events: 300 Stories follows resistance to the loss of sovereignty, the struggle against colonial rule, liberation and return, and the interpretation of surviving records. It does not limit the movement to a list of prominent leaders and battles. Teachers and students who maintained schools, merchants and workers who raised funds, women who built organizations, and families and migrants who sustained life in exile are also central to its account. The book uses concrete records to examine what people chose and the constraints under which they acted.
Its 15 parts, 30 chapters, and 300 topics begin with the renewed Donghak uprising, the loss of sovereignty, and righteous-army resistance. Newspapers, schools, contributions, associations, domestic surveillance, and overseas foundations lead into the declarations and demonstrations of 1919 and the formation and operation of the Provisional Government. The account then broadens to independence campaigns and displacement, direct-action resistance, workers and peasants, and students and young people. By arranging different methods and participants within a historical progression, it shows how demands for independence continued and changed.
Dedicated parts on women and families, language and writing, culture and faith form another major strand. Kim Maria, Geunuhoe, and the writings of Jeong Jeong-hwa and Yi Eun-suk bring organization, fundraising, communication, and care into view. The book examines Malmoi and the Korean Language Society, historical writing and literature, and the encounters of newspapers, music, and film with colonial conditions. It also considers interpretation alongside biography, avoiding a single fixed meaning for “nim” in Han Yong-un’s poetry and distinguishing Choe Yong-sin’s educational work from its fictional treatment.
Overseas communities and international solidarity take the account through the Americas, Hawaii, Mexico, Cuba, Japan, China, and Manchuria. Plantation labor and contributions appear alongside newspapers and schools, foreign allies’ reporting and legal defense, and cooperation and conflict between Korean and Chinese forces. Later sections examine wartime control, domestic resistance, and the Korean Liberation Army’s recruitment, training, publicity, administration, and cooperation

Memorizing event names and representative figures is not enough to understand what people actually did in the independence movement. This book narrows that gap by presenting choices and actions alongside the records that describe them. Battles fought by righteous armies and independence forces appear within the same history as the work of maintaining schools, newspapers, funds, and daily life.
Its 15 parts, 30 chapters, and 300 topics combine chronological and thematic reading. The declarations of 1919, the Provisional Government, and armed struggle lead into workers, peasants, students, women, language and culture, overseas communities, and international solidarity, then into return and documentation after liberation. A strength is its attention to concrete activities beside better-known political and military events, including Jeong Jeong-hwa’s communication, fundraising, and life in exile, and the labor and support of Korean communities in Mexico and Cuba.
The explanations pay particular attention to the limits of evidence. Differences in remaining troop numbers after Ugeumchi are not simply counted as battlefield deaths. A work called Janggang Ilgi is distinguished from a diary written during the events, since it is a later memoir. The discussions of judgments, prison records, and merit reports likewise do not treat the existence of a document as complete verification. Readers encounter questions needed for historical reading alongside the substance of people’s lives and events.
The pairing of Korean and English and the records and further reading at the end of each topic support classroom use and discussion. Readers can examine an event together and compare plans with implementation, or participants’ statements with an institution’s judgments. The effort to consider diverse approaches without directly projecting later political boundaries onto earlier participants also helps such discussion.
The book’s contribution lies not only in gathering many events into one volume but in connecting diverse participants with the interpretation of evidence. Its strengths are best used when the topics serve as guides to further reading rather than final conclusions on every research question. By retaining distinctions between declaration and liberation, government establishment and return, and activity and commemoration, it supports a broader and more concrete understanding of Korea’s independence movement.
