In 1395, King Taejo finished a palace for his new dynasty in the city that would become Seoul and named it Gyeongbokgung, roughly "the palace greatly blessed by Heaven." More than six hundred years later, in 2017, BTS shot the cover of an album at a bus stop built as a prop on the east coast near Jumunjin. The prop was taken down, but fans kept arriving to find the spot, so in 2018 the city of Gangneung built a replica on nearby Hyangho Beach. Both places are in this book, and international visitors plan whole days around each of them.
That mix is what this book is about. People come to Korea for its history and for its present: palaces and temples, but also markets, café streets, K-dramas and K-pop. The 100 places here sit in the six cities and regions that most independent travelers actually visit: Seoul, Busan, Jeju, Gyeongju, Incheon and Gangneung. Keeping to those six makes the book practical. Most of the places can be reached by subway, city bus, a short taxi ride, or on Jeju, a rental car.
Book I covers ten essential places in depth. Book II covers ninety more, sorted by the kind of trip you want: history, city life, nature, and the sea. Two people landing at Incheon on the same flight may want very different weeks, and a list sorted only by map makes both of them dig for what they came for.
