On December 29, 1967, the South Korean government made Jirisan the country's first national park. The mountain was an obvious choice. Its main ridge runs for dozens of kilometers across three provinces, and it had been treated as sacred ground for centuries. Over the next five decades that one designation grew into a system of national, provincial and county parks covering mountains, coasts, islands and the old capital of the Silla kingdom.
The system is still growing. On October 31, 2025, Geumjeongsan, the fortress mountain behind Busan, became the twenty-fourth national park. It opened on March 3, 2026, and is often called the country's first urban national park. Almost fifty-nine years separate the first park from the newest, and this book covers that whole span.
South Korea is a little larger than Indiana, yet its parks range from a volcanic crater lake on Jeju to tidal flats on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and from granite peaks a subway ride from Seoul to islands reached only by ferry. Asiatic black bears, gone from the wild by 2001, roam Jirisan again after a reintroduction program that began in 2004. National parks alone counted about 43 million visits in 2025.
Book I covers ten national parks in depth. Book II covers the other fourteen national parks and seventy-six provincial, county and city parks, grouped by region. Every entry tells you what the park is, what to look for, how to get there and why it is worth a visit.
