책 소개

UNESCO keeps three separate heritage lists, and Korea appears on all three in strength. The World Heritage List covers places: buildings, towns, and landscapes. The Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity covers living practices such as rituals, music, crafts, and food traditions. The Memory of the World Register covers documents, from medieval woodblocks to twentieth-century broadcast tapes. This book follows the same three-way split, with one part for each list and sixty entries in all.

The lists often describe the same institution from different angles. Jongmyo Shrine is a World Heritage Site, and the rite performed inside it twice a year is on the intangible list. Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon was badly damaged in the twentieth century and rebuilt from a construction record of 1801, and the series of royal records that includes that volume is in Part 3. The woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana appear as text in Part 3, while the halls that have kept them dry since the fifteenth century appear in Part 1. Reading across the parts shows how much of Korean heritage survived because someone wrote it down.

Much of it also survived because particular people took risks to save it. The peninsula was invaded by the Mongols in the thirteenth century and by Japan in the 1590s, ruled as a Japanese colony from 1910 to 1945, and fought over in the Korean War. Many entries include a moment when a monk, a scholar, a collector, a librarian, or a pilot decided that a book, a building, or a set of woodblocks was worth protecting at personal cost. Those stories are told where they belong.

Each entry explains what the heritage is, how it came about, what to look for, and how a visitor can see it in person. The sites are spread across the country, the traditions have their own calendars, and the documents mostly live in archives, so the practical notes differ from part to part. Together they cover about two thousand years, from Bronze Age dolmens to the archives of 2025.
