책 소개

Korean temples rarely sit by a main road. Most are reached along a valley path, past a stream and a one-pillar gate, and the first sign of them is often the sound of a wooden fish drum or the smell of incense drifting through pine trees. Almost every temple in this book is a working monastery. Monks live there, meals are cooked every day, and the morning and evening services go on whether or not anyone is watching.

Interest in Korean Buddhism has grown fast among visitors from abroad. Netflix's Chef's Table introduced the monk Jeong Kwan, who cooks at Cheonjinam hermitage beside Baekyangsa, to viewers around the world in 2017. The Templestay program, which lets anyone spend a night in a temple regardless of faith, now runs at more than 150 temples and drew a record number of participants in 2025.

Three things set Korean temples apart. The first is setting: they were placed in the folds of mountains according to the principles of pungsu (Korean geomancy), and the walk in is part of the visit. The second is food. Temple cooking avoids meat, fish, and the five pungent vegetables (garlic, green onion, garlic chives, wild chives, and asafoetida), and relies on fermented sauces, mountain greens, and seasonal produce. The third is access. Most temples are free or charge a small fee, welcome visitors of any background, and many will let you stay the night.

Seven temples in this book make up the UNESCO World Heritage site "Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea" (2018): Tongdosa, Buseoksa, Bongjeongsa, Beopjusa, Magoksa, Seonamsa, and Daeheungsa. Bulguksa and Seokguram were inscribed together in 1995, as was the Janggyeong Panjeon at Haeinsa, the hall that stores the Tripitaka Koreana woodblocks. Those sites make a good start, but many of the most memorable places here have no international listing at all.
