<English>

What stands behind the nine seals of kuji-in?

For many readers, kuji-in begins with the hands: nine interlaced gestures, nine syllables, a sequence glimpsed in martial arts, meditation, or the popular image of the ninja. Yet the seals were not made in a vacuum. They took their recognizable form in Japan among the yamabushi, the mountain ascetics of Shugendo, a religion in which Buddhist teaching, local mountain gods, and the hard discipline of the body met on sacred peaks.

Shugendo and the Yamabushi, the Mountain Ascetics Behind Kuji-In follows the nine characters back into that world. It opens with photographs of the nine seals and the nine cuts of kuji-kiri, with their names, mantras, and meanings, so that every reader first knows what the gestures look like. It then traces the legendary founder En no Gyoja and the brief historical record behind him; the rise of the Honzan and Tozan traditions; the mountain as mandala; the journey through symbolic death and rebirth; the clothing, routes, waterfalls, and fire rites of the yamabushi; and the long road by which a fourth-century Chinese mountain charm became the nine-character protection rite of Japan.

Inside you will find:

Photographs of the nine seals and the sword seal, with the lattice of kuji-kiri

The nine guardian deities of the seals, traced to the sacred mountains of Kumano, Haguro, Hakusan, Daigo, Kinpusen, and Kurama

Marishiten, the goddess of concealment, and the ninth seal of vanishing

How the yamabushi became linked with the image of the ninja, and what the documents actually show

A chronology, guides to lineages, sacred geography, and equipment, a pronunciation guide, a glossary, and a bibliography of 79 sources arranged by kind

Written for general readers, the book separates what the historical sources establish from what tradition and legend tell, and presents each with respect. It is a cultural and historical study, not a manual for undertaking austerities.

A companion to The Way of Kuji series: The Way of Kuji, Opening Consciousness, on the nine hand seals, and The Way of Kuji, Shaping Space through Kuji-Kiri, on the cutting of the nine.

Publisher’s Review

Most books about kuji-in begin and end with the hands. This one begins with the hands and then turns to look at the mountain behind them.

The opening pages give readers what they usually come for. The nine seals and the nine cuts of kuji-kiri are shown in photographs, with their names, their mantras, and the meanings attached to them. Only then does the book ask its real question: what kind of religious life gave these gestures their form? The answer it develops is Shugendo, the tradition of Japan’s mountain ascetics, and the book treats it with a breadth that kuji-in literature rarely attempts. It covers the legendary founder En no Gyoja and the thin historical record behind him; the institutions of Honzan and Tozan; the theology that let buddhas and local gods share a single peak; the idea of the mountain as mandala; and the clothing, routes, waterfalls, and fire rites through which that idea was lived.

What distinguishes the book is its discipline about evidence. It separates, again and again, what the sources establish from what tradition remembers and legend embellishes, and it gives each its due without letting one pass for the other. The history of the nine characters is told in layers: a fourth-century Chinese mountain charm, a thirteenth-century reference to the sword seal, Muromachi spell-tablets, and the later ritual compilations of Shugendo. Where no document survives, the book says so.

Two chapters will be of special interest to readers who already know the seals. One follows the nine guardian deities into the sacred mountains of Kumano, Haguro, Hakusan, Daigo, Kinpusen, and Kurama. The other takes up Marishiten, the goddess of concealment, and the ninth seal of vanishing. A chapter on the ninja image separates what the ninjutsu manuals record from what modern fiction added.

Written in clear, unhurried prose and supported by a chronology, reference guides, a glossary, and a bibliography of 79 sources arranged by kind, this is an introduction for curious general readers that does not talk down to them. As a companion to The Way of Kuji, it gives the series what it needed: the world in which the nine seals were made.
