Most herbal medicine question books test whether the reader remembers herbs and formulas. This book tests whether the reader can use them. Each of its 101 cases asks the candidate to work as a practitioner does: identify the pattern from the clinical data, choose or write the formula, revise it when the patient returns with new findings, and explain the treatment and its precautions to the patient.
Its greatest strength is that half of the prescribing items require writing a complete formula with dosages from memory. Multiple-choice practice rarely builds this skill, yet it is exactly what clinical practice and written examinations demand. The detailed scoring guides make it possible to assess one's own written answers objectively, which is unusual for a self-study book.
The book also reflects the realities of modern practice. Patients take warfarin, antidepressants, chemotherapy, and diabetic medication; toxic herbs carry clear dose limits; and red flags for referral are built into the cases. For candidates preparing for the NCCAOM, CALE, or Pan-Canadian examinations, and for practitioners who want to sharpen their clinical reasoning, this is a practical bridge from knowledge to practice.
