책 소개

Systematic Theology: Returning to Scripture

Systematic theology is not another revelation that replaces Scripture. Rather, it is a faithful and scholarly endeavor to understand rightly and explain systematically the truth that God has revealed through Scripture. Therefore, Scripture must be both the starting point of systematic theology and its final standard of judgment.

On the basis of this principle, this book confesses the thirty-nine books of the Old Testament and the twenty-seven books of the New Testament—the sixty-six books of Holy Scripture—as the final and normative authority for faith and doctrine, and seeks to present systematically the major doctrines of the Christian faith.

Throughout the history of the Church, there have been numerous theologians and theological traditions. Reformed and Presbyterian theology, Calvinism, Arminianism, the Wesleyan tradition, Evangelicalism, Pentecostalism, and various movements emphasizing the work of the Holy Spirit have all contributed, within their respective historical contexts, to the study and explanation of biblical truth. These theological heritages deserve respect and careful study.

Nevertheless, no theologian can stand above Scripture, and no confession of faith or theological system possesses the same inspired and revelatory authority as the sixty-six books of Scripture. Theology must not judge Scripture; rather, theology itself must be judged by Scripture.

Accordingly, this book does not seek unconditionally to defend one particular theological tradition or to attack other traditions. Its guiding principle is to believe and confess firmly what Scripture clearly teaches, to reject what Scripture clearly denies, and, where Scripture does not provide detailed answers, to refrain from elevating human reasoning to the status of definitive divine revelation.

The same principle applies to the work of the Holy Spirit. We believe that the Holy Spirit continues to work in the Church and among believers today, bringing about regeneration and sanctification, bestowing gifts and power, and enabling believers to fulfill the mission of proclaiming the gospel. At the same time, we do not regard personal dreams, visions, prophetic impressions, or extraordinary spiritual experiences as possessing canonical authority equal to Scripture. We should neither restrict the work of the Holy Spirit nor turn personal experience into revelation. Every spiritual claim must be discerned in the light of Scripture.

This book also does not seek to create an unnecessary conflict between Scripture and academic scholarship. The biblical languages and manuscripts, history and archaeology, philosophy, the natural sciences, and other fields of scholarly inquiry can assist us in understanding God's Word and His created world. Yet academic hypotheses or the scholarly consensus of any particular age cannot become new revelation or replace Scripture as the final authority for Christian faith.

All the doctrines examined in this book—including bibliology, theology proper, the Trinity, creation, theological anthropology, Christology, pneumatology, the atonement, salvation, ecclesiology, the sacraments, and eschatology—point toward one central reality: the great biblical gospel that the Triune God created all things, saves fallen humanity through the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ, establishes His Church through the Holy Spirit, and will finally consummate His saving work in the new heavens and the new earth.

Systematic theology, therefore, must never end merely with the accumulation of knowledge. Sound theology should lead us to know God more truly, trust Jesus Christ more firmly, obey the Word under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, serve the Church, and proclaim the gospel to the world.

Because this book contains human study and judgment, it may contain shortcomings. This book itself, therefore, remains subject to the judgment of Scripture. Wherever something is found that must be corrected in th

요약

A Theological Milestone Built Upon the Sole Authority of Scripture

Systematic Theology: Returning to the Bible establishes the core doctrines of the Christian faith by confessing the 66 books of the Bible as the final and normative authority for faith and doctrine. The author clarifies that theology is not a new revelation replacing Scripture, but a faith-driven and academic task to understand and explain the truth revealed by God through His Word.

While respecting historical theological heritages such as Calvinism and Evangelicalism, this book remains unaligned with any single tradition, setting Scripture alone as the ultimate standard of theological judgment. It points out that personal spiritual experiences or academic hypotheses cannot surpass the authority of the Word, firmly confessing what Scripture teaches while exercising restraint regarding human speculation where Scripture remains silent.

From bibliology to eschatology, the central theme threading through the entire work is the redemptive history of the Triune God. Moving beyond the mere accumulation of knowledge to guide readers toward a life of truly knowing God and obeying His Word, this book serves as a clear milestone not only for seminarians and pastors, but for all believers seeking sound theological discernment.
