책 소개

The Adventures of Young Sugar is an ecological coming-of-age story set in Australia’s beautiful Moonlight Forest. It follows Sugar, a little sugar glider, and his friends on an extraordinary journey through nature.

Sugar is neither the largest nor the strongest animal in the forest. His special gift is his curiosity, kindness, and ability to bring different friends together. When Lulu’s strength, Coco’s wings, Flip’s wisdom, and Grandma Emu’s experience are united, the friends embark on a journey to revive the Moonlight Tree and protect their forest.

As they cross Windy Gorge, the Deep River, the Black Cliff, and the Forest of Ashes, Sugar and his friends learn about courage, friendship, cooperation, responsibility, and respect for life. The story introduces young readers to Australian wildlife and landscapes while drawing upon the ancient legend of the Rainbow Serpent.

It offers young readers an exciting adventure while reminding adults of the enduring importance of nature and community.

요약

The Adventures of Young Sugar is a warm ecological tale showing how even the smallest creature can become the heart of a community. Sugar does not solve problems through physical strength or extraordinary magic. He observes, asks questions, listens to his friends, and brings their different abilities together.

The central idea of the story is the importance of being “together.” Lulu has strength, Coco has wings, Flip has wisdom, and Grandma Emu has experience. Each possesses a valuable gift, but none can save the forest alone. Only by recognizing their differences and cooperating can they cross the Deep River, face the Black Cliff, and overcome the Spirit of Fire.

The Moonlight Tree and the Spring of Life effectively express the book’s ecological philosophy. The Spring of Life is not merely magical water; it symbolizes the desire to trust, understand, and live in harmony with others. In the final chapter, the decision to distribute the Moonlight Tree’s seeds throughout the forest conveys a particularly meaningful lesson: wisdom and hope should not be possessed by one individual or planted in only one place. They should be shared with the entire community.

The use of Australian animals—including the sugar glider, emu, koala, wombat, and platypus—together with the Rainbow Serpent legend gives the story a distinctive setting. Through the adventure, young readers can encounter Australian nature and culture while discovering that all forms of life are interconnected.

Because some chapters contain many characters and rapidly developing events, younger readers may benefit from discussing each chapter with a parent or teacher. The facing-page bilingual format also makes the book valuable for language learning, allowing readers to compare Korean and English sentences and expressions.

Ultimately, The Adventures of Little Sugar teaches that true courage does not begin with power. It begins with trusting friends, helping one another, and caring for the living world. The book gives children confidence and imagination while inviting adults to rediscover a warmer relationship with nature and community.
