The lives of sixty monarchs, politicians, religious figures, businesspeople, writers, artists, singers and athletes offer ways to examine how Thai society developed and changed. Instead of reducing each figure to praise or controversy, the book distinguishes documented actions, later remembrance and interpretations that differ between sources.

The opening chapters consider the Ramkhamhaeng inscription and memories of Sukhothai, the warfare and diplomacy of Naresuan and Narai, and the formation of a capital and dynasty under Taksin and Rama I.
