책 소개

The church had spells of its own.

Anglo-Saxon priests sang charms over barren fields, and the difference between magic and miracle was never the phenomenon. It was whose hand held the stamp of approval. Your invented religion runs on the same machinery. Who ordains the priests, who pays them, and who decides that one prayer is a blessing and the next is heresy? How many words does an invented language actually need before it stops being decoration? And what makes a spell feel like it costs something?

Most worldbuilding books teach invention. This one hands you the actuals, the tithe and the parish ledger, the true fighting strength of a military order, the trial procedure of the Inquisition, the word list a working invented language starts from, and a thousand years of magic as it was actually practiced, from field charms to the grimoires the church chained to its shelves.

Volume II covers what a world believes, speaks, and casts. Gods and pantheons, doctrine, miracles, heresy, and the end of the world. The parish, the monastery, and the crusading orders. A step-by-step recipe for a fictional language, from sound system to names, place names, and curses. Then magic, medieval and modern, through alchemy, herbalism, and D&D, down to the rules that make a magic system hold together. Volume II of three, for novelists, game designers, and game masters.

요약

Most worldbuilding guides teach you how to imagine. This series hands you the actuals, and Volume II hands you three of them, the organization and account books of the real medieval church, the working tools of real linguistics, and the record of magic as it was actually practiced.

The virtue of the religion chapter is administration, not theology. Who collects the tithe and how it is divided, why a crusading order's true fighting strength was a few hundred men, how many attendants an inquisitor traveled with and what they did. These are the numbers that make an invented religion run rather than merely look impressive. The language chapter is the most practical in the series, closer to a workbook than an essay. Starting from the Swadesh list, it walks through consonant systems, word order, and the rules for coining personal and place names, in one continuous build. The magic chapter is the centerpiece. Instead of going straight to system-design theory, it first restores the magic medieval people actually believed and performed, the charms, amulets, circles, and grimoires, and the church that condemned them, and only then moves on to D&D and Sanderson's laws. In that order, it becomes self-evident which historical raw material modern fantasy magic was refined from.

Each volume stands on its own. Volume II is the skeleton of the series, covering the three layers through which a world explains itself, meaning belief, speech, and power over nature.
