책 소개

The king did not own his kingdom.

He owned his manors, and little else. The rest he held together with oaths. A duke knelt, placed his hands between the king's, and said Volo esse homo vester, I wish to become your man. Everything in your throne room runs on that machinery. Why the crown cannot tax without consent, what a lord actually does all day and what his serf does, why the dangerous man at court is the young king's uncle, and why the empire next door must keep expanding until it falls.

Most worldbuilding books teach invention. This one hands you the actuals, the Latin of the homage oath, the account book of a count worth 400 pounds a year, the poll tax rolls of 1377, Roman roads and Mongol relay stations, and the stage machinery of Versailles.

Volume III follows power from the ground up. Bloodline, divine right, and the feudal contract. The manor, the lord's day and the serf's. Taxes, armies, absolutism, and factions. How a kingdom becomes an empire, how an empire is run, and why it always falls. Then the long memory of power, in ruins and fallen civilizations, dynasties and family trees, calendars and eras, succession and usurpers, titles, epics, and relics. Volume III of three, for novelists, game designers, and game masters.

요약

Most worldbuilding guides teach you how to imagine. This series hands you the actuals, and the concluding Volume III hands you the ledger of power, meaning why the king is king, what a lord's day looks like, what a serf's day looks like, where the taxes flow, and why empires fall.

The virtue of the politics chapter is practice, not theory. What words the vassal's oath actually used (the Latin is included), where a count's 400 pounds a year came from and where it went, how many manors it took to arm a single knight. These are the numbers that make an invented throne run rather than merely look impressive. The empire chapter first restores the real technologies of rule, Roman roads, Mongol relay stations, the Ottoman devshirme, and only then dissects the evil-empire cliché. Why the empire is always the villain, and how to write that villain more convincingly. The history chapter closes the series by putting time itself into a world, with ruins and fallen civilizations, genealogies and heraldry, calendars and eras, royal titles and forms of address, and the most frequently repeated pattern of usurpation in history, the uncle who shoulders aside a young nephew.

Each volume stands on its own. Volume III answers the questions that hold a world together at the top. Who rules, by what right, over whom, and what remains when they are gone.
