처음 「국제 리사이클링 스토리」를 기획할 당시, 우리의 관심은 버려진 사물과 재료에 새로운 생명과 가치를 부여하는 예술적 행위에서 출발하였다. 그러나 전시가 거듭되면서 리사이클링의 의미는 물질의 재활용이라는 개념적 경계를 넘어 점차 확장되었다. 그것은 익숙한 것을 새롭게 바라보는 시선이자, 소멸해 가는 가치에 대한 성찰이며, 자연과 인간, 환경과 사회의 관계를 다시 질문하는 예술적 사유로 발전해 왔다.

Art connects different worlds, carrying the traces of their encounters into new dimensions of time.

Recycling Story, an international art project that began in Pyeongchang, celebrates its tenth edition this year. The past decade represents far more than a succession of exhibitions. It has been a time of accumulated experiences, during which artists from diverse cultural backgrounds and artistic traditions have come together, built meaningful relationships, reflected on contemporary issues through art, and discovered new possibilities for creative expression.

When Recycling Story was first conceived, our primary interest lay in the artistic act of breathing new life and value into discarded objects and materials. However, as the exhibitions continued, the meaning of recycling gradually expanded beyond the conceptual boundaries of material reuse. It evolved into a way of seeing the familiar from new perspectives, reflecting on values at risk of disappearing, and questioning the relationships between nature and humanity, the environment and society through artistic inquiry.

In art, renewal is not simply a return to a previous state. Rather, it is a creative process that gives new meaning to what already exists, connecting different times and experiences to generate new values. From this perspective, the ten-year journey of Recycling Story can be understood as an ongoing exploration that extends beyond the regeneration of materials to encompass the renewal of thought, relationships, spaces, and the sustainability of artistic values.

Above all, the most significant achievement of the past decade has been the relationships and mutual trust established among artists through sustained international exchange. What began as a modest artistic initiative in a regional community has grown into a platform for international contemporary art exchange, bringing together artists from Korea and various countries around the world. Despite differences in language, culture, and aesthetic perspectives, these artists have communicated through their works, and their encounters have inspired new creative motivations and deeper cultural understanding.

The essence of international artistic exchange lies not merely in exhibiting artworks across national borders. It lies in understanding one another's artistic worlds, respecting differences, and creating new possibilities for artistic expression through continued encounters and dialogue. Such relationships cannot be established overnight. Only through trust and shared experiences accumulated over time can they become lasting cultural assets.
