60 People of Malaysia is a bilingual Korean–English introduction to the country's formation and change through the choices and work of sixty individuals from different periods and communities. Rather than reducing history to a list of celebrated achievements, it helps readers visiting, staying long-term, studying or undertaking training in Malaysia use names encountered in streets, schools, memorial sites, films, songs and sports as starting points for conversation. It includes the experiences of Sabah and Sarawak alongside those of the peninsula, without assuming that one person or community speaks for every ethnic, religious or regional group.

Part 1 begins with Parameswara and Tun Perak in the kingdom of Melaka, then examines resistance to colonial rule through figures such as Dol Said, Rentap and Mat Salleh, as well as Adnan Saidi during the Second World War. Part 2 explores the cooperation and disagreements involving Tunku Abdul Rahman, Onn Jaafar, Tan Cheng Lock and V. T. Sambanthan. It distinguishes negotiations over independence and citizenship, Malayan independence in 1957, and the formation of Malaysia in 1963. Part 3 addresses governance, economic policy, reform movements and civic rights, placing achievements and controversies in their different contexts rather than merging them into one verdict.

Part 4 connects literature and visual art with society through Abdullah Munsyi's writing, Lat's cartoons, P. Ramlee's films and music, Michelle Yeoh's international career, and Yasmin Ahmad's portrayals of everyday relationships in a multiracial society. Part 5 moves through Robert Kuok's trading businesses, Lim Goh Tong's tourism development, Tony Fernandes's aviation, Jimmy Choo's design, space science and philanthropy. Part 6 covers football, badminton, squash, diving, cycling and para badminton, examining not only individual records but also the contribution of colleagues, facilities, institutions and spectators.

Each profile begins with birth information, a field of activity, a key statement and an image. An English infographic then illustrates relationships and processes behind major events. Explanatory Korean paragraphs are immediately followed by their English counterparts, with open-ended conversation questions and references at the end. The book distinguishes documentary evidence from tradition, historical events from cinematic portrayals, and verified photographs from later illustrations. Korean and English name indexes and an image-source guide help readers explore the people who interest them.

Publisher's Review (draft for registration)

60 People of Malaysia begins with a distinction between recognizing a famous name and understanding the society in which that person lived and worked. The account of Parameswara separates a foundation tradition from contemporary documentation, while the profile of Tun Perak avoids equating a dynastic minister with a modern parliamentary prime minister. The histories of Rentap and Mat Salleh identify different systems of rule across the peninsula, Sarawak and Sabah. Individual courage and achievement remain visible, alongside other communities, actual losses and the limits of surviving records.

In the sections on independence and politics, the distinct processes of 1957 and 1963 are maintained. The contributions of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Tan Cheng Lock and V. T. Sambanthan are examined through negotiation and organization. Readers can consider how elections, citizenship, plantation workers' livelihoods and local autonomy became related but distinct questions. The chapters on political reform and civic action distinguish the goals and outcomes of economic policies, the exercise of power and responsibility, and the activities of lawyers and ordinary citizens. Rather than reducing events to a single position for or against a leader, the text asks which evidence supports an account and whose perspective it reflects.

Film and music are not treated merely as colourful additions. Yasmin Ahmad's Sepet places relationships in a multiracial society within the everyday life of young people. P. Ramlee's films and songs connect the production environment across today's borders with audiences' memories. Business, science and sport are likewise more than lists of successful individuals. Robert Kuok's work is viewed through the relationships among trade, manufacturing and hospitality; Nicol David's achievements are considered alongside early access to public sports facilities; and para badminton medals are understood in relation to when the sport entered the Paralympic programme. Across these subjects, individual effort is considered together with institutions and cooperation.

The reading sequence is clear. An image and introductory statement establish each person, an English infographic presents the structure of events, and alternating Korean and English paragraphs develop the account. The final questions are invitations to listen to another person's experiences and memories, not tests or requests that an individual represent an entire community. The book can be used in conversations during travel or extended residence, in study and training, or in reading about Malaysia's society and culture. Name indexes in both languages, individual references and an image-source guide support further exploration. Its distinctive value lies in offering ways to connect different people, periods and perspectives without reducing a complex society to a single image.
