The Moment We Discover Our Own Horns
— A Review of The Boy on the Roof
Everyone is special. Yet most people go through life without knowing it. As we strive to be like everyone else, we sometimes feel uneasy about—or hide—the very things that make us who we are. The Boy on the Roof tells the story of a boy who discovers what is special within him and tentatively feels his way toward a path of his own. In this book, horns are a symbol of that uniqueness.
“There are quite a few special people in this world.”
When he turns fourteen, Haeon feels something strange beneath his hair. He carefully touches it. A horn. Frightening at first, it begins to seem rather cute the more he touches it. Fear and curiosity, bewilderment and affection mingle. He is encountering a part of himself he has never had a name for.
The elderly hairdresser remarks casually, “There are quite a few special people in this world.” Her quiet words make his horns neither a flaw to be corrected nor a cause for alarm. It is as though she is simply saying that people come in all kinds, and Haeon is one of them. What seems natural to her is still difficult for the boy to accept in himself.
“But I don’t want to be special.”
Haeon’s reply expresses his wish to be like everyone else. Being special sounds appealing, but living with that difference in plain sight can be frightening. It may draw stares, invite questions, or make you the subject of laughter.
Haeon makes hats to hide his horns. And those hats earn him affection. This is one of the story’s intriguing paradoxes: what he creates to conceal himself becomes an expression of his talent. His hats hold both the desire to hide and the desire to make something.
Yet beneath the hats, his horns keep growing. The more he hides them, the more his head hurts. What makes him special does not disappear simply because he turns away from it. Haeon’s pain shows how much it can cost to keep yourself hidden.
“It’s dangerous! Come down!”
People call out to the boy on the roof. Their words carry concern, but to Haeon they also sound like a demand to return to a familiar height. The world tells him that straying from where everyone else walks is dangerous, that he should come down before taking a different path.
For Haeon, however, the rooftop is a place where he can move and breathe freely. Somewhere that looks precarious from below may be the very place where the person standing there feels most at ease. Through these differences in height, The Boy on the Roof reveals different ways of experiencing life. Caring about someone does not necessarily mean knowing which path is right for them.
“Is this really my path? If it’s mine, they could at least make it easier to recognize.”
At last, the wind carries his hat away, and Haeon runs across the rooftops once more. But his doubts do not simply vanish. Discovering his horns and learning to live with them are two different things.
Haeon grumbles, falls, and gets hurt. If this is his path, he wonders, why is it so difficult to recognize? His grumbling brings him closer to us. Even after a moment of self-discovery, life remains uncertain. We still have to take the next step ourselves.
Haeon is no hero striding forward with unwavering faith in his uniqueness. He is someone gradually discovering what lies within him and awkwardly finding a way to live with it. The book does not rush to smooth away that awkwardness. It sees the time spent feeling one’s way as part of a life, too.
“The wind is strong over there, too.”
Along the way, Haeon watches a shorebird flying against the wind. “The wind is strong over there, too,” he murmurs. As he struggles to keep going, he recognizes that another creature is also weathering its own winds.
As the girl in the cape says, there are more people like us in the world than we might think. People with different horns are finding their own paths. Recognizing himself opens Haeon’s eyes to others. He learns that he can be different without being alone.
The Boy on the Roof invites readers to reach gently beneath their own hair. Perhaps our horns lie in the qualities we have hidden because they set us apart, the sensitivities we have dismissed as useless, or the things we love but have put off for too long.
Everyone is special. Haeon discovers this a little sooner and feels his way along a path that is not yet clear. As we follow him, the question we have been asking about the boy quietly turns toward us.
Beneath which hat are your horns hiding now?
