What is Arirang?
To many people, Arirang is one of Korea’s most familiar songs. Yet there is no single original melody, no single set of lyrics, and no known individual who created it. Across generations and regions, people have sung different Arirang songs, adding their own words, emotions, and memories.
*ARIRANG: A Song That Changes as It Passes* explores how a song without one identifiable creator came to occupy such an important place in Korean cultural life—and how it continues to change as it moves between people.
Across seven parts and twenty-one chapters, E. Heart follows Arirang from its regional roots through the complicated emotions of *han* and *heung*, the emergence of modern popular culture, colonial history, migration, war, division, and the lives of Korean communities beyond the peninsula.
The book also considers moments when Arirang became a shared cultural symbol, including the 1991 unified Korean table tennis team and the public gatherings of the 2002 World Cup.
Moving into the present, it examines the relationship between traditional cultural forms and contemporary K-culture, including the renewed attention brought to the name Arirang in 2026.
But this book is not simply a history of a folk song. It asks larger questions about the way culture is created, preserved, transformed, and shared.
Who makes culture? What changes when audiences become participants? Can a cultural tradition remain connected to its origins while welcoming new voices? And who has the right to call a song “ours”?
Rather than reducing Arirang to one national emotion or one unchanging identity, this book invites readers to see culture as something carried through relationships—something that can remain meaningful precisely because it is able to change.
At its heart lies a question:
