In late autumn, a few persimmons remain on a tree after the harvest. In Korea, persimmons deliberately left for birds are called *kkachibap*—the magpie’s share.
Why would someone leave behind fruit they could have taken? And what might this small gesture reveal about the ways people share, help, and live alongside one another?
*Kkachibap: The Magpie’s Share* begins with this simple question and follows the many forms of connection found in Korean everyday life and history.
From food shared at a family gathering to *pumasi*, the exchange of labor between neighbors, and *dure*, organized collective work, the book explores how people supported one another through practical needs and lasting relationships. It then turns to *gye*, a form of mutual financial cooperation, and to traditions such as Arirang, Ganggangsullae, and pansori, where voices, movements, and responses brought people together.
The exploration continues through moments of collective action in modern Korean history: the National Debt Redemption Movement, the 1998 Gold Collection Campaign, volunteer efforts following the Taean oil spill, and the street cheering of the 2002 World Cup.
Yet this book does not simply celebrate the warmth of community. It also asks difficult questions. When does helping become an obligation? When does a sense of belonging exclude those outside the group? Can people care for one another without demanding that everyone live, think, or participate in the same way?
Across five parts and fifteen chapters, E. Heart examines the possibilities and limitations of togetherness, connecting older customs with contemporary questions about care, social trust, individual freedom, and responsibility toward future generations.
Rather than asking readers to return to the past, this book invites them to consider what deserves to be carried forward—and what needs to change.
At its heart is one enduring question:
**What can we leave for others while making room for one another to live?**
