Do you know the exact meanings of the many place names left by American Indians: “Niagara” in Niagara Falls; “Dakota” in North Dakota and South Dakota; state names such as Texas, Arkansas, Kansas, and Utah; river names such as Mississippi, Missouri, Susquehanna, and Potomac; and lake names such as Michigan and Erie? Do you know the meanings of the tribal names “Mohican,” “Lenape,” “Iroquois,” “Narragansett,” “Shawnee,” “Cherokee,” “Potawatomi,” and “Tewa”?
In 2007, Professor Sung Tae Son happened to read a collection of American Indian language materials at the University of Arizona library, setting him on an unexpected path. In those materials, he discovered Korean words and, in some passages, complete Korean sentences still in use today. This discovery marked the beginning of twenty years of research into language, culture, and human migration.
In American Indians, Descendants of Ancient Koreans, Professor Son presents evidence that the ancestors of Koreans migrated to the Americas after the beginning of the Common Era and became the ancestors of American Indians. Drawing on linguistic comparisons, historical records, archaeological materials, and traditional customs, he traces a migration route through the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Aleutian Islands into North America. He presents evidence from language, culture, history, religion, and customs that directly connects American Indian history with a longstanding mystery in ancient Korean history: why states founded on the vast plains of Manchuria collapsed on their own as their populations disappeared.
This book explores similarities in pronunciation and meaning, together with common features across everyday life, including housing, clothing, fishing, whaling, and traditional games. Maps, photographs, and illustrations help readers follow these comparisons and the author’s interpretation of their significance.
How should we understand the many correspondences between peoples living far apart, separated by an ocean? The author says that even now, whenever he reads the language collections, he continues to discover various forms of evidence. We have been taught that the ancestors of American Indians migrated to the Americas during the Ice Age and that their languages, customs, religions, and other cultural traditions arose independently within the Americas. How should we assess the differences between what we have been taught and Professor Sung Tae Son’s discoveries and explanations?
