This volume is a complete English translation of my eighth Korean poetry collection, published in 2025. The title remains unchanged from the original. As I present this collection to you, there are two things I wish to share.
Previously, I published two English selections: How to Make a Mink Coat (2015) and Children of Fire (2020). Those books were curated excerpts from my earlier Korean works. While I sought to translate the complete works of Despair Named Hope in their original sequence, a few poems were omitted as they lacked the necessary context for an English-speaking audience, and the order was slightly modified for editorial flow. I have chosen to omit the “Author’s Note” that appeared at the end of the Korean edition, as I felt it might not be essential for English-speaking readers. In its place, I have included this preface at the beginning of the book.
Furthermore, as you will discover while reading, every poem in this collection is a prose poem. While poetry typically consists of irregular lines and stanzas, I have dedicated the past several years to perfecting a collection composed entirely of prose. My intent was to maximize the resonance of meaning within a concise narrative framework. These stories drift between the starkly realistic and the surrealistically fantastic, and I hope that readers find a particular joy in this intersection.
It is often said that a vast chasm exists between the English and Korean languages, making the bridge between them difficult to build. My first two selections were translated by my friend and translator, Seth Feldman, who has since returned to his home in Canada. Fortunately, we live in an era where AI translation has evolved to a remarkable level of proficiency. Consequently, this collection was translated through a rigorous process of cross-verification using several AI models, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. While I believe the essence of the Korean text has been faithfully rendered into English, I remain mindful that some expressions may still feel unfamiliar to a native reader.
Living and writing in Korean, the prospect of publishing in the English-speaking world is daunting. Yet, I believe that when no path exists, one must carve a new one. This book is the fruit of such an endeavor. I look forward with great curiosity and anticipation to how these words will be received by readers in unknown lands.
