From the vast Mongolian steppe to the snow-covered Tien-Shan and Pamir Mountains, and from the blue domes of Samarkand and Bukhara to the desert cities of Ancient Merv and the Silk Roads, UNESCO Heritage of Mongolia and Central Asia explores the cultures, landscapes and collective memories of Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan through their UNESCO heritage.

Central Asia is far more than a region once crossed by the Silk Roads or a vast homeland of nomadic peoples. For thousands of years, pastoralists and settled communities, merchants and craftspeople, religious traditions and scholars have met across this region, creating cities and empires, music and rituals, technologies and documentary traditions.

The volume brings together 114 officially inscribed UNESCO heritage topics: 28 World Heritage properties, 65 elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage and 21 entries on the Memory of the World International Register.

Readers travel from the Orkhon Valley, Mongolian Altai petroglyphs, deer stones and Xiongnu noble cemeteries to Silk Roads cities such as Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Merv, and then to the vast natural environments of the Pamirs, Western Tien-Shan, Uvs Nuur, Dauria and the deserts of Turan.
